In 2025, the National Park Service (NPS) announced the expansion of its reservation system to several additional national parks and popular outdoor recreation areas. This move aims to reduce overcrowding and minimize environmental impact caused by increased visitation.
These parks will now require timed entry permits for certain trailheads and campgrounds during peak season, primarily for high-traffic areas like Angel’s Landing in Zion and Half Dome in Yosemite. The system is designed to ensure that visitors have a sustainable experience while preserving the integrity of the parks’ natural landscapes.

Why it matters: The reservation system helps manage the flow of visitors, preventing overuse that can lead to trail erosion, wildlife disruption, and waste accumulation. This policy reflects the ongoing effort to protect public lands while making sure everyone has a chance to explore these iconic destinations.
