Matagorda, Texas – April 18, 2025

Anglers across the Gulf Coast are setting their sights on Matagorda Bay as anticipation builds for the 2025 Matagorda Slam Fishing Tournament, scheduled to cast off next week from April 24 to 25. Hosted along the scenic and biodiverse Texas coastline, this two-day event is more than just a contest of skill and strategy—it’s a celebration of sport fishing and conservation, with proceeds benefiting the Gear Up for Game Wardens Fundraiser.
This year’s tournament allows teams of 2 to 4 anglers to compete for top honors across three primary categories: redfish, speckled trout, and flounder—collectively known as the “Texas Slam.” Anglers will launch from designated locations along Matagorda Bay and return for daily weigh-ins to submit their catches under strict size and handling regulations in accordance with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) guidelines.
The registration fee is currently set at $400 per team, increasing to $500 for late entries received after March 24. The event is open to recreational and semi-professional anglers, with optional side pots offering additional chances for big payouts, including heaviest slot redfish, heaviest trout, and heaviest flounder.
Another highlight is the Calcutta prize pool, where teams can auction themselves off before the tournament begins—raising both competitive tension and charitable funds. All proceeds go toward the Gear Up for Game Wardens initiative, supporting Texas game wardens through equipment upgrades and safety tools essential for enforcing fishing regulations and protecting natural resources.
Fishing Times: Sunrise to designated weigh-in deadline on each day
Eligible Waters: Matagorda Bay and surrounding estuaries
Legal Catch Requirements: All submitted fish must meet TPWD size and slot limits; live weigh-ins encouraged for catch-and-release scoring
Disqualification: Use of illegal bait, early launch, or any rule violation results in immediate disqualification
Weigh-In Location: To be held at Matagorda Harbor Pavilion starting 3:00 p.m. each day
Beyond the thrill of competition, organizers emphasize ethical fishing practices, environmental stewardship, and the importance of local conservation. “It’s not just about bringing in the biggest fish,” said tournament coordinator Jake Ramirez. “It’s about doing it the right way and giving back to those who protect our waters every day.”
The tournament also includes a family-friendly kickoff event on the evening of April 23, featuring live music, a gear raffle, and special guest appearances by local game wardens and wildlife experts. Sponsors include regional bait shops, marine suppliers, and outdoor apparel brands, reflecting the tight-knit fishing community that has long supported the event.
While exact prize amounts will be finalized based on total entries and side pots, past Matagorda Slam tournaments have awarded tens of thousands of dollars in cash and gear. More importantly, the event continues to shine a light on responsible angling and the collaborative efforts needed to sustain the sport for future generations. As the countdown continues, the Matagorda Slam promises a weekend of high-stakes fishing, camaraderie, and conservation—where every cast could be a winner, and every dollar raised helps protect Texas’ treasured coastal waters.
